History of H.Samuel

High street jeweller H.Samuel had humble beginnings in Manchester in the 1860s, as a mail order company headed by Harriet Samuel, who had taken over her father-in-law's Liverpool clockmaker's business in 1862. In 1890, Harriet's son opened the first H.Samuel store in Preston, soon followed by further stores in Rochdale and Lancashire. He relocated the expanding company headquarters to Birmingham in 1912 and after the First World War Harriet's grandsons Gilbert and Robert became the company's chairman and vice chairman.

Until the brothers' deaths in the 1970s, the company grew to over 200 stores across the UK, and Robert's son then took the helm, leading H.Samuel during the 1980s into an acquisition deal with the James Walker Group and a merger with the Ratner Group. This resulted in a restructure and group rebranding in the 1990s as the Signet Group. Today, there are over 300 H.Samuel stores nationwide and it is a familiar face on UK high streets.

H.Samuel's high street and online stores cater to customers' needs by supplying quality and affordable branded jewellery, watches, collectibles and gifts, as well as a bespoke engraving service, guides and advice on jewellery care and selection. There is also interest free credit available on a range of products (subject to circumstances), making the jewellery shopping experience convenient and hassle free.

H.Samuel proudly supports CLIC Sargent for children with cancer, and alongside regular campaigning it is currently selling George, the CLIC Sargent mascot bear, from which all profits will be donated to the charity.

Opening Times

Store opening times differ from store to store, with some stores opening at later times, such as those within retail parks or late night shopping centres. However, generally H.Samuel stores (particularly high street stores) are open at the following times:

Monday to Saturday: 09:00-17:30Sunday: 10:00-16:00 (some stores closed on Sundays)

Delivery Information

Standard delivery is available on online orders of less than £500. This costs £2.95 for orders under £49 and is free of charge for orders of between £49 and £499.99. Standard deliveries take two to five days, excluding Sundays and public holidays, and estimated delivery times are given at the time of ordering. Standard deliveries do not require a signature.

Express delivery is available for £4.95 and items ordered before 2pm on weekdays will be delivered on the next working day, or if placed after 2pm, within two working days. Orders of more than £500 will automatically be placed on express delivery free of charge. Express deliveries require a signature.

Delivery to a store for collection is free and orders usually arrive in store after four to eight days. Store collections must be made by the person who placed the order, and the payment card used at the time of purchase will be required as ID.

Returns Policy

Items can be returned to any H.Samuel store for a refund or exchange. Pierced items can only be returned if they are in the original sealed packaging for hygiene reasons. A full refund to the original payment method will be given if the item is accompanied by a receipt or dispatch note and if the item was a gift it can be exchanged for gift cards of an equivalent value. Items can also be returned by post accompanied by a completed returns form available online and the receipt or dispatch note, and the original payment method will be refunded within 28 days. Exchanges cannot be processed by post.

Security & Reviews

H.Samuel use SSL technology in their online systems and all personal information is encrypted to prevent loss of personal and payment data. MasterCard Securecode and Verified by Visa add another level of protection at the point of purchase and H.Samuel also uses ReD's ebitGuard technology to detect and prevent card fraud.

H.Samuel has unfortunately received some negative reviews from customers on TrustPilot (https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.hsamuel.co.uk), but it is worth remembering that people are often more motivated to leave negative reviews than positive feedback following a purchase, particularly when ordering something that can be very personally emotive such as jewellery.
